V’ger as Metaphor for the Information Society

So last night in my work induced stupor it occurred to me that in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, you could view V’ger as a metaphor for the coming age of information- the all knowing, consuming machine. This isn’t so ridiculous when you consider that a lot of discussion about the information society originated in the 70s. And how does Star Trek react? Not by trying to destroy the information overload(lord), but by embracing it, helping to create something new out of the seemingly all destroying monster. How very singularian. Of course, it was not long after that they took the idea of a human/technology hybrid and turned it into the communist borg.

I don’t really believe it was the author’s intent or anything- just a thought.
