I’ve decided to try to change my eating habits. Nothing big, just a real emphasis on portion control. Serving size or less of the food I like, 1/4 to 1/2 portion of food when I go out to eat, ask for a to-go container when I get my dinner and put the part I’m not eating away.
Now here’s the big thing:
I inhale food. Everyone in my family eats as quickly as possible. I don’t know if this is learned or if it grew out of our urge to get away from the dinner table as soon as we were finished, but we eat really really fast. And we also clear our plates. And then we clear the plates of whoever hasn’t cleared theirs. It’s disgusting.
So from now on, no more gulping full glasses of liquid refresh, and no more big bites. I’m sipping, taking small bites, and most importantly taking my time. Even if I have to think about nothing but eating slowly while I’m eating, that is what I’m going to try to do. We ate at Panera yesterday and instead of eating my whole sandwich in five minutes I ate half of it and alternated my bites with sips of water. I was completely full for the afternoon and had no urge to snack.

  1. I like the idea of using some sort of electronic device to time your bites. Whenever a signal is given (tone, vibration in pocket) you take a bite. at a certain longer interval take a few second to reflect on your feelings and see if you are satisfied.
